It is hard to understand why Putin would trade Russia's economy, political standing in the world, and 500k in killed in wounded for a smoldering pile of rubble. That the Russian narrative of greatness is a very expensive dream.

  • @richardcory5024

One month later, what has happened? The Ukrainians have gone on the defensive, doing what they do best, which is to out-think the Russians, keep the meat grinder fully fuelled with Russian corpses and taking out Russian momentum logistically which is where they are always weak. Putin desperately needs some sort of victory. The longer he goes without one, the weaker his position becomes and the Ukrainians score higher on the valourometer, which ensures continued Western support. However, as usual, Kotkin does not mention the economic and financial peril fast threatening the future of the Russian state. The GDP of Russia is simply not enough on which to build the creation of a European empire. This isn't Sparta we're talking about.

I literally do the same thing, I do searches for 'Stephen Kotkin' at least once a month and I've said it many times: Dr. Kotkin needs his own channel on a platform or a podcast...something. I like to listen to stories from professor Kotkin, which is always fascinating. However, it is a bit disappointing to see him becoming a financial analyst, rather than an intelligent historian. If you take it you have the position, the geographic advantage, you have the option of building something in the future, you have the space to expand and so on. there are many Grand Strategic reasons to control Ukraine and Taiwan and Mr Kotkin knows that better than me.

Dude, neither of these countries needs extra land to build on, etc. If Russia put just half the cost of what it has already paid for its second invasion of Ukraine - not just direct costs but indirect as well - into something creative, productive, etc., instead, it would be a ridiculously richer and more powerful country today.

I take your point. After many years and much investment, Taiwan would be a valuable asset again. The main value, as I see it, are the Taiwanese people. But how vibrant an economy would Taiwan be with Taiwanese working under the CCP’s system? The luster has come off of Hong Kong since the crackdown.

Big fan of Kotkin but he needs to add more parameters in his historical rigid analysis and deduction: - EU's role. This is a war in Europe not distantly from a perception point of view. Threatens EU security directly. - Social media. Where we no longer rely on news anchors or outlets but see things unfold live and on global scale.
